The first successful surgery for the treatment of congenital kyphosis (a type of spinal deformity) was performed at the Hazrat Ali Asghar Children's Hospital, which is part of the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS). This surgery was carried out by Dr. Morteza Ashrafi, a pediatric neurosurgeon and spine specialist.

According to the hospital's public relations department, this was the first time such a surgery had been performed at this medical center. Usually, these complex and costly surgeries are only performed by a limited number of neurosurgeons and spine surgeons. However, in this case, the surgery was done successfully and at the expense of the government by the young and skilled Dr. Ashrafi, who has a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery.

The surgery was performed on a 7-year-old child who had a congenital disorder in the formation of the 12 vertebrae, resulting in a severe lumbar hunchback and issues with lower limb weakness, as well as urinary and fecal disorders. After undergoing diagnostic procedures, Dr. Ashrafi performed the 7-hour surgery, which completely and definitively treated the child's condition. The child is now reported to be in good general condition.

The hospital administration also acknowledged and thanked the efforts of Dr. Tahereh Chavoshi (the anesthesiologist), the operating room staff, and other colleagues who were involved in this complex and successful surgery.
