A faculty member of the Iran University of Medical Sciences has issued a warning regarding the misconceptions surrounding herbal medicines, coinciding with the commencement of National Poison Prevention Week. Dr. Bahareh Sadat Yousefsani, a faculty member, pharmacist, and toxicologist at the School of Iranian Medicine, emphasized that the arbitrary use of herbal remedies is prohibited and that these substances should be treated with the same caution as conventional medications.

Dr. Yousefsani highlighted the prevalent belief among many individuals that herbal medicines are inherently "safe" and "natural." However, she pointed out that, like any chemical medication, herbal remedies can lead to serious health complications, including poisoning, liver or kidney damage, and hazardous drug interactions, especially when used without proper knowledge or in conjunction with synthetic drugs. She stressed that awareness and consultation with healthcare professionals are essential to mitigate these risks.

In her warning message, Dr. Yousefsani outlined several critical recommendations aimed at preventing poisoning associated with herbal medicines:

  1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Avoid using herbal products arbitrarily and always seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
  2. Avoid Combination Use: Do not combine multiple herbal products with each other or with chemical medications without professional guidance.
  3. Source Products Wisely: Ensure that herbal products are obtained exclusively from reputable sources accredited by the Food and Drug Administration.
  4. Special Precautions: Exercise heightened caution when using herbal medicines in children, the elderly, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Dr. Yousefsani concluded by emphasizing that the term "natural" does not equate to "harmless." She reiterated that informed awareness and professional consultation are crucial in preventing the potential dangers associated with the use of herbal medicines.
