The Faculty of Iranian Medicine at Iran University of Medical Sciences has underscored the critical importance of public awareness and expert consultation regarding the consumption of medicinal plants. Dr. Bahareh Sadat Yousefsani, a faculty member and toxicologist, issued a stark warning about the risks associated with improper use of plants and mushrooms, particularly in light of the increasing incidence of poisoning during warmer months.

During a specialized discussion held in observance of National Poison Prevention Week, Dr. Yousefsani highlighted that not all plants are safe for consumption and not every mushroom is edible. She noted that poisoning incidents can range from mild gastrointestinal disturbances to severe liver damage and, in some cases, can be fatal.

The doctor identified several common causes of poisoning, including the consumption of improperly stored leftover foods, the ingestion of wild and unidentified mushrooms, and the use of medicinal plants without prior consultation with healthcare professionals.

Dr. Yousefsani specifically addressed the dangers posed by certain mushrooms, explaining that some species closely resemble edible varieties yet contain harmful compounds such as amanitin. These toxins remain potent even after washing or cooking, emphasizing the necessity of consuming only commercially available mushrooms that are properly labeled and packaged.

Additionally, she cautioned that certain medicinal plants, including oleander, foxglove, and black crown, can be toxic or even lethal if misused. Engaging with these plants without adequate scientific knowledge or professional guidance can lead to serious health consequences.

In conclusion, Dr. Yousefsani stressed the need for enhanced public education and awareness regarding the safe use of plants and mushrooms. To mitigate the risk of poisoning, she advised individuals to refrain from consuming wild mushrooms and unidentified plants, maintain proper food storage temperatures, verify the safety and source of medicinal plants, and seek expert advice before using any medicinal flora.
