Learning from Past Experiences and Focusing on Future Challenges are Essential for Success in Promoting Social Capital

The President of Iran University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Nader Tavakoli, underscored the significance of a community-centered approach in addressing social issues and enhancing social capital. He articulated that success in this endeavor hinges on three critical factors: learning from past experiences, concentrating on future challenges, and avoiding peripheral distractions.

In remarks delivered at the fourth NeuroTalk event, as reported by the university's public relations office, Dr. Tavakoli emphasized that a community-centered strategy involves collaborative efforts to tackle social problems while fostering broad participation. He noted that the 14th government and the Ministry of Health are particularly committed to supporting students and emerging leaders in the promotion of social capital.

Dr. Tavakoli stated, "As a forward-thinking institution, Iran University of Medical Sciences is dedicated to addressing societal challenges and enhancing social capital through collaboration with various stakeholders."

A Multifaceted Approach to Social Issues

Dr. Mehdi Moghtadaei, Vice President for International Affairs at Iran University of Medical Sciences, also contributed to the discussion, asserting that social issues cannot be resolved through a singular perspective. Instead, they necessitate a multifaceted approach that integrates insights from neuroscience, sociology, and cultural studies.

He highlighted the importance of understanding brain functions—such as memory, emotions, and decision-making processes—as pivotal in addressing social challenges, including violence, maladaptive behaviors, and mental health concerns.

Continuing on the role of universities, Dr. Moghtadaei remarked, "Universities have a responsibility to bridge diverse disciplines, particularly neuroscience and social sciences. NeuroTalk aims to establish a dialogue among experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and educational sciences, facilitating experience sharing and the creation of a sustainable network."

Neuroscience: A Key to Addressing Contemporary Social Challenges

Dr. Seyed Behnameddin Jamei, Head of the Neuroscience Research Center, emphasized the growing relevance of neuroscience in contemporary discourse. He noted that the Neuroscience Research Center has made significant strides in integrating neuroscience with social issues in Iran.

Dr, Jamei stated, "Neuroscience has transcended the confines of medicine and life sciences, now influencing various social, cultural, economic, and even political realms." He also pointed out that the prevalence of neurological and mental health disorders in Iran mirrors global trends.

The fourth NeuroTalk event, held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, marked the culmination of three previous successful events that collectively hosted over 3,500 participants. Initiated in August 2022 under the slogan, "Neuroscience is as vast, orderly, and equally unknown as the galaxy," NeuroTalk seeks to conduct scientific, psychological, and philosophical explorations of pressing issues.

Targeting the general public, the event aims to enhance awareness of neuroscience and its applications, providing scientifically grounded responses to the primary questions facing society, particularly within the academic community.
