Collaborative Strategies Essential for Suicide Prevention
At the "Development of Social Health of Tehran Citizens" conference, Dr. Nader Tavakoli, President of the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), emphasized the necessity of an inter-sectoral approach to effectively implement suicide prevention programs. He highlighted the importance of collaboration among executive and social institutions and local resources.
The conference, held at the Milad Tower International Conference Center, included notable attendees such as Tehran's Mayor Dr. Alireza Zakani and other health officials. Dr. Tavakoli presented alarming statistics, noting a 4.9 percent increase in suspected suicide deaths in Tehran province for the year 2024, underscoring the need for multi-sectoral interventions to address rising psychiatric disorders and aggressive behaviors, particularly among vulnerable populations.
He announced the establishment of a provincial suicide prevention center aimed at adapting the national program to local contexts, coordinating efforts among various agencies, and utilizing media and educational institutions. Ongoing initiatives include assessing suicidal thoughts among different groups, evaluating existing measures, and providing resources for at-risk individuals and their families to access psychological support services effectively.
