Ali-Asghar Children’s Hospital was established in 1964 with the name of “Shahrazad.” The hospital was built in a 5130 m2 land with a building area of 8500 m2. Mrs. Nayyereh Shiva was the first director of the hospital who supplied hospital costs by attracting benefactors. Thereafter, accredited doctors such as Dr. Ahmad Meshauf, a pediatric nephrologist, Dr. Shukrollah Yousefi, a pathologist, Dr. Abbas Khalesi, a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Hadi Semaei, a neonatologist, and Dr. Parvaneh Vosough, a pediatric hematologist and oncologist jointed the hospital.

After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the hospital was renamed “Hazrat-e Ali-Asghar (AS)” under supervision of the Tehran Regional Health Organization and continued its activities as a public hospital. In these years, the hospital was directed by Dr. Shokrollah Yousefi and then Dr. Amanullah Ehsani, a pediatrician.

With the commencement of the Iran University of Medical Sciences activity in 1986, the hospital was affiliated to this university and training courses were began for medical students, interns, and residents. In 1992, fellowship courses were launched for neonatology, pediatric surgery, pediatric hematology and oncology, pediatric endocrinology, and pediatric nephrology aiming to train subspecialists for various provinces. Currently, graduates of this center are serving as specialist or subspecialist in most provinces across Iran.

In 1996, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric dentistry, and dialysis departments were added to existing wards. Establishment of a large dormitory for residents and interns was an important measure of this period. In 2004, Dr. Seyed Javad Nasiri, a pediatric surgeon, was appointed as the head of the hospital. During his presidency, PICU and NICU were developed and the psychiatry ward began its activities. With the provision of one floor of the Gamma Knife Building by Kamrani Charity Foundation, all subspecialty clinics were transferred to a suitable and standard place. In addition, the physical space of the operating rooms and hematology, surgery, and general wards were completely reconstructed and equipped with a public effort.

Dr. Elham Talachian is the hospital’s head since October 2013, several months after separation of Iran and Tehran medical universities. In the fall of 2013, the Radiology Unit was equipped with DR, PACS, and CR by continuous follow-ups of authorities and donations of benefactors. By the end of 2013, renovation and equipping of PICU was completed and exploited by increasing the capacity to 20 beds. In 2014, the Emergency Ward was reconstructed according to existing standards. Also, a new dentistry ward was built to offer higher-quality services to patients by increasing the capacity from one unit to three dental units.
