Iran Medical Center was founded in 1975 offering subspecialty programs in Medicine, Paramedicine, Nursing, and Biomedical Library and Information Sciences. In 1976, the School of Biomedical Library and Information Sciences was established, offering B.S. and M.S. programs, and admitting 13 students in its first year of activity. In 1986, Iran Medical Center was renamed to Iran University of Medical Sciences and the School of Biomedical Library and Information Sciences was accepted as its subordinate unit. On November 11, 1986, the specified School was renamed to ‘The School of Health Services Management and Information Sciences’ upon the request of the School Dean and approval of the Council for Development of Universities. In 1991, upon a second request, the word “services” was removed from the name of the School and, following approval, it continued its activities under the name of ‘The School of Health Management and Information Sciences’.
An essential component of a balanced development in any country is undoubtedly extensive development in its national healthcare system. Accordingly, it is vital
toachieve healthcare at international standard levels. The mechanisms of such a development inevitably involve training of competent and effective workforce, especially in the area of management, in order to exploit their scientific and technical expertise and state-of-the-art achievements in management. Higher education institutes are undoubtedly the main establishments in charge of this important task. The School of Health Management and Information Sciences was established to realize this policy by considering development indicators in the healthcare system with the help of a scientifically-skilled management cadre.
This School has tried its best to institutionalize the training
ofeffective and qualified workforce to promote the quality and expand the number of healthcare centers. The School of Health Management and Information Sciences was founded in line with the new domestic developments in scientific management to realize national development goals, particularly inevitable developments in the national healthcare system. The realization of this goal certainly requires training effective, specialized, and intellectual human resources in such disciplines as Biomedical Library, Health Services Management, and Medical Records. The school has been active in institutionalizing the promotion of student scientific and educational levels. To this end, it offered Ph.D. programs in Health Services Management and Health Information Sciences in the second semester of the academic year 1998-1999. In the academic year 2009-2010, several new M.S. and Ph.D. programs were added. Moreover, in recent years, attempts have been made to add new disciplines, including Hospital Engineering (in 2013).
