The Nursing School of the Iran Medical Center was established in 1975 by virtue of the decisions made by the selected commission of the 103rd Assembly of the Higher Education Development Council to B.S., M.S., and Ph.D nurses. It became operational in September 1976 by admitting students for the M.S. program for the first time in Iran. In 1986 and after merger of several institutes of higher education, the oldest of which being Firoozgar Higher Education Institute of Nursing (founded in 1965), the School of Nursing and Midwifery officially became operational.  In 1989, it received the approval for starting the M.S. program for Midwifery and, since 1990, began admitting students in this field. Since 1999, upon receiving the approval for starting the Ph.D. program of Nursing and admitting students in this program, it expanded its educational and research activities in order to promote the level of knowledge in society.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery of Iran University of Medical Sciences is among the most active nursing and midwifery schools in Iran, and its graduates are among the top graduates in the entire country, holding high-level managerial, educational, and therapeutic positions. The basic qualifications of this School include high-quality nursing and midwifery education as well as the effective and appropriate application of educational technologies. These qualifications support the mission, perspective, and values of the School. They are also in line with the University's mission with regard to research based on health and treatment needs in the domain of nursing and midwifery.

Members of the Board of Directors in addition to the School's Strategic Monitoring Committee and department heads are in charge of revising the School’s strategic plan. The School has four key committees and councils, including the Board of Directors, Education and Research Council, and Graduate Education Council.

Following Iran University of Medical Sciences, this School was merged with Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2010.
